Residues of Intertwining Operators for Classical Groups

Let G be a classical group over a p-adic field. Representations of G can be obtained by parabolic induction from Levi subgroups of G. Such representations are related by ``meromorphic" intertwining operators. Shahidi observed that these operators encode interesting arithmetic information. We discuss joint work with Shahidi in which we employ harmonic analysis to detect the presence of a pole.
