Description
Radioactive Ion Beam (RIB) production has taken two complementary paths, ISOL (Isotope Separator Online) and in-flight or fragmentation. The ISOL method has a chemical dependence and is slow. The in-flight method allows access to very short-lived species on either side of the stability line but gives beams with poor emittance and is being used for some reactions and decay studies. In a modern RIB facility like FRIB, fragmentation products will be stopped and ionized in a gas stopper and re-accelerated beam will be generated which will have all the positive aspects of ISOL without its limitations. In view of these developments, a method of enhancing the reach of the BARC-TIFR Pelletron Accelerator Facility by producing and accelerating RIBs is described. A conceptual scheme for achieving this goal by optimally using existing resources will be discussed.
