How to climb Mount Everest: the QCD sign problem at finite density

A determination of the QCD phase diagram is still lacking due to the infamous sign problem in lattice QCD at nonzero baryon density. In this talk I review recent progress in this field, using stochastic quantisation, in which the sign problem is evaded by a stochastic exploration of the complexified configuration space SL(3,C).
