The Information Paradox and the black hole interior in AdS/CFT

Recent investigations of the black hole information paradox have led to the suggestion that quantum effects in the black hole interior are much larger than naive estimates. In particular, the "firewall proposal" suggests that such effects can radically modify the smooth structure of the horizon of a large black hole. After reviewing this proposal, we will test it by constructing local probes of the black hole geometry in the AdS/CFT correspondence. We conclude that the horizon of a black hole has no firewall, in line with semi-classical expectations. We also describe how our construction sidesteps indirect arguments for the existence of a firewall. This study points to some interesting limits of locality in quantum gravity, and the "state dependence" of local operators.
