This series of 4 lectures will start with a brief review of the electronic structure and optical properties of bulk and nanostructured semiconductor in the absence of external fields. The major part of the lectures will be devoted to the changes induced by electric or magnetic fields, or a combination of them. The latter one, which implies the combination of Landau splitting and Stark effect, has only very recently been investigated.
