Unlike most recent talks about the Fundamental Lemma recently proved by Ngo, who was awarded with a Fields Medal for this achievement, I'll not say anything at all about what Ngo did. Instead, I talk about the origins of the Fundamental Lemma in work of Langlands, trying to give some idea of a few simple cases.
