Abstract:
We commonly see individuals complaining of acidity and heartburn. Gastrointestinal disorders, particularly those involving acid-related conditions, represent a significant global health concern affecting quality of life and healthcare utilization. This talk will provide a comprehensive overview of three interconnected conditions: acidity, heartburn, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Stomach acid plays a crucial role in digestion and pathogen defence, but its overproduction or mis regulation can lead to various pathological conditions. The talk will explore the physiological mechanisms underlying these disorders, particularly focusing on the role of the lower oesophageal sphincter (LES) and its dysfunction in GERD development.
There are many factors responsible for these conditions. Common triggers are dietary factors such as spicy foods, alcohol, citrus fruits, and caffeine, will be analysed alongside lifestyle factors like obesity, smoking, and stress. The talk will discuss progression from occasional heartburn to chronic GERD, emphasizing the importance of early recognition and intervention.
There are many approaches to these from lifestyle modifications and dietary adjustments, progressing through various pharmaceutical interventions including antacids, H2 receptor antagonists, and proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). Surgical options for refractory cases will be also discussed but they are uncommon. The presentation emphasizes the importance of individualized treatment approaches, considering factors such as symptom severity, frequency, and impact on quality of life.
We will specially discuss preventive strategies and long-term management techniques, including weight management, dietary modifications, and timing of meals. The talk will address the potential complications of untreated GERD, including Barrett's oesophagus and its associated cancer risk. We will also discuss H Pylori infections and its treatment. The importance of proper diagnosis through clinical evaluation and diagnostic tools such as endoscopy and pH monitoring will also be emphasized, particularly in cases with atypical presentations or warning symptoms.
