Large Language Models, which are at the heart of modern Artificial Intelligence (AI) Systems, rely on remarkably simple algorithms. We will start with a brief technical overview of these systems and then discuss their impact on the theoretical sciences and broader society. AI systems have solved a number of important open problems in Mathematics and are likely to affect theoretical physics. These systems are also expected to be strategically important. We will discuss some implications for scientific research institutes and the necessity for India to keep up with the frontiers of AI rather than simply focusing on its applications.
